The 36 all-female singing group "Brazilian Voices" will be performing the songs of famed Brazilian composers to illustrate the strength of the Amazon Rainforest in their upcoming concert, titled "Brazilian Voices Amazonas: The Rhythm of Nature" on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Aventura Arts and Cultural Center in Aventura.
“The concert is truly a celebration of the (Amazon) rainforest, but is also a plea to support the ecosystem of the world, including the Everglades in Florida," said Beatriz Malnic, music director and co-founder of "Brazilian Voices" with Loren Oliveira.
"What the audience will see in our concert is a vocal harmony of 36 singers who will create through their passionate singing soothing songs that picture the Amazon Rainforest thriving in fusion with nature," said Oliveira.
More than 25 songs will be featured in the 90-minute concert that will also be illustrated visually on stage with screens of images of birds, mangroves and trees by Brazilian artist Ernesto Kunde, who owns an art gallery in the Wynwood district of Miami.
“All the visuals were taken from the beauty of nature in Miami and South Florida and I was happy to have my work blended with the beautiful 'Brazil Voices' in concert," said Kunde.
Malnic selected songs from the works of famed Brazilian composers Dori Caymy, Tom Jobin, Sergio Mendes and Marisa Monte, among others.
"All the songs are composed in reference to nature and the lyrics (mainly in Portuguese) add clarity to the beauty of nature in the music," said Malnic.
Songs on the program include: "Agua de Beber" ("Water To Drink") and "Aguas de Marco" ("Waters of March") by Jobin, "Bachianas Brasileiras" ("Lovely Songbird") by Heitor Villa-Lobos, "Blackbird" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney of The Beatles; "Rio Amazonas" ("Amazon River") by Caymy and "Ponta de Areia" ("Native Dancer") by Milton Nascimento.
Mendes, who passed away at age 83 in early September, is known internationally for creating the Bossa Nova genre of music. The audience will hear some of his famous songs such as "Fool On The Hill" and "Mas Que Nada" ("Yes I Agree") in the concert.
Brazilian visual artist Clara Piquet, who owns her studio in Deerfield Beach, will showcase an exhibit of her works featuring Brazilian indigenous communities and the environment in the lobby of the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center.
Founded in 2001 as a not-for-profit organization, "Brazil Voices" is based in Weston and has featured singers from five nations over the years. The 36-female vocal group has performed in 940 concerts over the past 23 years, including numerous performances at Arts Garage in Delray Beach, Aventura and Broward Centers, among other South Florida venues with performances featuring popular Brazilian musical genes, such as bossa nova, Forro, Brazilian rock and samba.
"We are especially proud over the years of our Brailian Voices Arts and Healing Program where we bring the soothing sounds of bossa nova and samba to medical centers and facilities that serve the elderly," said Malnic.
