Spring Mix at Broward Center
Sunday, Apr 6, 2025 at 2:00 PM - English

This spring, the many sides of dance take center stage raw and wild, soulful and structured in a program packed with company premieres, a Robbins classic, and a burst of Balanchine brilliance.
Jerome Robbins kicks things off with Glass Pieces, a thrilling blend of postmodern movement and classical ballet. Inspired by the nonstop energy of city life, this electrifying work pulses to the hypnotic rhythms of Philip Glass.
The company premiere of José Limón's Chaconne brings a moment of quiet intensity. Originally performed by Limón himself, this stunning solo set to Bach's deeply expressive violin music balances precision with pure emotion.
A returning favorite, Balanchine's Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux is an eight-minute masterclass in ballet bravado short, stunning, and supremely cherished. It's a thrill ride for dancers and audiences alike.
The program closes with a company premiere: Alexei Ratmansky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Ten dancers bring Mussorgsky's legendary score to life against a backdrop of Kandinsky's Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles. It's a ballet that's as vibrant and unexpected as the art that inspired it.
Spring Mix is a feast for the senses, where every moment is a masterpiece.

About the Composers:
Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847) was a German composer and pianist of the early Romantic era who was known as Fanny Hensel after her marriage. Her compositions include a piano trio, a piano quartet, an orchestral overture, four cantatas, more than 125 pieces for the piano and over 250 lieder, most of which were unpublished in her lifetime. Although lauded for her piano technique, she rarely gave public performances outside her family circle. In 1847, an anonymous critic in the Neue Berliner Musikzeitung found in the trio ...broad, sweeping foundations that build themselves up through stormy waves into a marvelous edifice. In this respect the first movement is a masterpiece, and the trio most highly original. Angela Mace Christian refers to the piece in Grove Music Online as "one of her most impressive chamber works.
Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) was a British-American classical composer and violist best known for her chamber music featuring the viola. She is considered one of the most important British composers in the interwar period between World War I and World War II and the most distinguished British female composer of her generation. Born in England (of a German mother and an American father), Rebecca Clarke claimed both British and American nationalities and spent substantial periods of her long life in the United States, where she permanently settled after World War II. Although Clarke's output was not large, her work was recognized for its compositional skill and artistic power.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, a lush, historic oasis nestled in the heart of West Palm Beach, this exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience Katz's iconic art in a setting where natural beauty and artistic excellence converge. The Gardens, once the private residence of renowned sculptor Ann Norton, now serve as a cultural landmark dedicated to preserving her artistic legacy while hosting world-class exhibitions like ALEX KATZ: Portraits and Landscapes - Through the Seasons.
Renowned for his minimalist approach, Katz emerged during the 1950s as a counterpoint to the gestural dynamism of Abstract Expressionism. His signature style distills time and space into visually arresting compositions that balance flatness with emotional depth. Influenced by cinematic storytelling and the aesthetics of advertising, Katz's art transcends Pop Art conventions, emphasizing clarity, balance, and personal narrative. Recurring subjects, such as his muse Ada Katz, take center stage in works like Large Black Hat (Ada) and Ariel (B&W), exploring themes of identity and presence with striking simplicity.
The exhibition further delves into Katz's profound engagement with nature's rhythms. His Autumn and Spring series, with their abstracted depictions of leaves and budding branches, capture the ephemeral beauty of seasonal change. These works, alongside floral masterpieces such as Purple Irises on Red and Yellow Flags on White, underscore Katz's ability to merge fleeting natural beauty with the enduring precision of printmaking techniques.
As Katz approaches his centennial, this exhibition stands as a powerful testament to his continued influence on the art world. His reductive methodology transforms everyday moments into monumental visual essays, emphasizing elegance, simplicity, and human connection.
Sponder Gallery invites collectors, art enthusiasts, and the community to experience this remarkable exhibition at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. Immerse yourself in the poetic vision of Alex Katz while exploring the historical charm of the gardens, where art and nature exist in perfect harmony.
