Singer Melanie Sierra of Delray Beach just completed an international tour as Maria in “West Side Story." On Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9, she will be performing Broadway songs with the Symphony of the Americas in a concert titled “Broadway Showstoppers” at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale.
SOTA Artistic Director Pablo Mielgo will be conducting the orchestra and tells miamiartzine.com that he is looking forward to doing a Pops concert that differs from the classical fare that is the trademark of symphony orchestras.
“There is no question that Broadway music is part of the musical landscape that is important to our audiences. I am proud that our subscribers, orchestra members and administrative staff all want to include Broadway music as part of our subscription series,” says Mielgo, who is in his third season as both Artistic Director and Conductor of Symphony of the Americas.
Sierra is familiar with Broadway tunes having toured in "West Side Story" in Munich, Paris, Tokyo and Zurich.
“One of the many highlights on tour was performing at Theatre du Chalet in Paris for over three months," says Sierra. "The legendary venue, working and living in France and the amazing warm reception we received from Parisians was extremely special,” she says.
Born and raised in Delray Beach, the 30-year-old soprano Sierra is often compared to her older sister Nadine, a Latina soprano, most well known for her interpretations of Gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto" and Lucia in Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor."
Melanie carved her own path when she made her debut in New York singing at age 12 in Lincoln Center.
Moving to New York after graduating college, Sierra performed in the Broadway musicals “Camelot,” “In the Heights,” “Into the Woods,” “Les Miserables” and “Mama Mia” as well as the operas “La Boheme,” “Rigoletto” and “The Hours” at The Metropolitan Opera.
With Symphony of the Americas, Sierra will be singing familiar songs from Broadway musicals, such as “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from “Sunset Boulevard,” “Broadway Baby” from “Follies,” “I Could Have Danced All Night” from “My Fair Lady,” “I Dreamed A Dream” from “Les Miserables,” “Somewhere” from “West Side Story” and “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” from “Phantom of the Opera,” among other selections.
“I have performed with symphonies before. However, performing at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts not far from where I was born is a special feeling. I feel that I have completed a full circle to come home after being on tour around the world.”
Other Broadway music to be performed by SOTA as instrumentals will be selections from the musicals “Miss Saigon,” “Porgy and Bess” and “The Sound of Music,” among other selections.
South Florida Symphony Orchestra will conclude its current season with two concerts on May 5 and 7 featuring Israeli violinist Pinchas Zuckerman in a program of classical music composer Brahms, Debussy and Ravel at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale.
