Dot Fiftyone Makes a Move

The “fiftyone” referred to the address of 51 NW 36th Street. 51/50 is a typical slang term from police code meaning crazy and violent, which was the neighborhood’s modus operandi before daring artists and galleries plonked down one by one over the past...

By: Marlene Sholod on .

partyxxxLocust Projects – “a not for profit alternative exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas without the pressures of gallery sales or limitations of conventional exhibition spaces” – celebrated its quinceanera in style. More than 400 art lovers and luminaries gathered for the gala Spring Fling fundraiser on April 27 held at the lofty, starchitectural 1111 Lincoln Road. There was food from some of the area’s most popular restaurants and two silent auctions: one featuring luxury items.

And the audience leaps to its many feet, whistling, shrieking and, mirabel dictu, even clapping politely. It's a night of love. “Love you, brother. Love you sister. Even though you won a Carbonell and I didn't. But hey, at least I was nominated and I'm proud of that.” A genuine essence of friendship throughout the sparkling two and a half hour show at the Broward Center...

Keith Haring, an Artist for All Generations

By: Marlene Sholod on .

TA9TH7x4RjatD7T1n469QwXXEyCfj674kZiD1WhtvEwToo many years ago to mention, I was in a cab going down Manhattan’s FDR Drive when something captured my eye: the words “Crack Is Whack” screaming from the wall of a nearby handball court. As arresting (no pun intended) as that statement was in its powerful simplicity, equally compelling were the bold lettering and intricately interlaced, jazzy jumble of cartoon-like images that surrounded it. OK, full disclosure, this was the ‘80s, and the colorful, kinetic graffiti artwork was unlike anything I had ever seen.

AlexTrimino.LuminousDeering Estate Artist-in-Residence Alex Trimino, "Luminous" (photo provided by Deering Estate)            Deering Estate at Cutler has played an active part in Miami culture since 1916. I became reacquainted with the historic estate through Fountainhead (art) Studios via whatever grapevine I happen to be entwined. Melding two venerable swathes of Miami’s urban/urbane culture, Deering invited Fountainhead artists to participate in the Speak Now exhibition held on the Deering Estate grounds (2/16 - 3/10). Deering Estate is a bit of a hike. My natural sloth has been...

I can die now," says a twentysomething girl to her boyfriend after snapping Mark Wahlberg's photo as he stops to greet fans on the red carpet outside The Regal South Beach Cinema on Lincoln Road. Wahlberg was in Miami on a publicity stop for his new movie Broken City, where a few lucky fans got to see a sneak peek of the film before opening in theaters across the country on Friday.

Art Basel Miami Beach - Get Ready to Be Blown Away December 6 - 9

Agustina WoodgatemmmmArt Basel artist Agustina Woodgate flanked by assistant Daniel Oliveira (l) and Anthony Spinello(r) Photo Irene Sperber            I managed to be in New York City for Sandy, the big hurricane of 2012. As a resident of Miami Beach, how I left Hurricane Central and walked straight into a major typhoon up north (named for the local dirt of my home base no less) is beyond me. Since I was in The City I opted to collect a soupçon of thoughts about Art Basel from a featured Manhattan gallery and, later, back home from Spinello Projects. Many NY galleries heading for Miami Beach...

Locust Projects presents Theaster Gates, Soul Manufacturing Corporation

TheasterGates2xxxArtist Theaster Gates working with Yoko Fukata making Japanese tea bowls             The title of Locust Projects new exhibition yanked me out of a momentary torpor. Manufacturing soul? Can you manufacture a soul? Have I been doing that? I went on a quest for enlightenment.

Locust Projects has been a worthwhile organization in South Florida since it’s inception in 1998 and continues to be a gratifying brick in building a solid and lasting Miami arts community that won’t suddenly be gone with the wind. Founded by three local artists, this...

City of Wilton Manors Art Gallery 21

By: Michelle F. Solomon atca ffcc on .

Artists MaterialsxxxArtist's Materials by Celia Diaz        People who are artistic visionaries can look at a lump of clay and see a finished work of art. When Constance Ruppender participated in a Jazzercise class inside the Woman's Club of Wilton Manors, the president of the Central Area Neighborhood Association of Wilton Manors (CNAWM), saw a different use for the space; it was a space filled with people, art and activity. She envisioned Art Gallery 21.

The idea actually took root when the new Wilton Manors...

Last weekend the grounds at the Viceroy in Brickell were transformed into the pop up Brickell Biergarden including original beer benches, Blasmusik and culinary delights by award winning Austrian chef Wolfgang Ban.

Random Act of Culture

By: Irene Sperber on .

Random Act miami airport xxFriends in northern climes need at least three weeks' notice for a social occasion, preferably offered up formally. Newcomers are chagrined to note Miami’s last minute commitment penchant, or complete lack of commitment thereof.

The Knight Foundation has an event custom-made for our humidity soaked sensibilities. Intrigued? Great, but I can’t tell you details because it’s a surprise; and no, you don’t really hate surprises. I can advise that it will occur the afternoon of September 1st on Lincoln Road. In an effort to fill in the rest of this article and offer a few hints in the bargain, let me give a bit of background.
