Art Wynwood 2013

By: Irene Sperber on .

GellerJesse Geller's VIP booth mural             Art Miami closed two two months ago, but left it’s “coat” behind, hanging out in Wynwood’s Mid Town just waiting for the 2013 Wynwood Art Fair to fill it’s 100,00 square foot tented pavilion. I attended the Thursday night opening, which proved to be a pleasant experience. You just never know when you head out if you are going to be glad you made the effort or wish with all your heart you still were wearing your fuzzy slippers with your alarming at-home wear...

Chase Westfall

By: Heike Dempster on .

Chase Westfall 1
The exhibition features paintings from 2009 to 2013 that range from abstraction to figurative realism. Westfall’s use of diamond shape grids and geometric patterns imposes a harmony onto the canvas while offering glimpses of chaos and, at times, disturbing imagery ranging from medical procedures to slaughtered cows and Judeo-Christian traditions. The diamonds symbolize value and richness and provide a calm surface beauty, giving the viewer a sense of organized refinement.

Live and Learn

FRED TOMASELLIFred Tomaselli           Okay, so maybe that New Year’s resolution didn’t work out so well; days merrily scoot by without so much as a nod to myriad changes you swore you’d initiate by now, for sure. I have a few thoughts for inner home improvement that may kickstart us all, and does not involve gym memberships or slash your snack drawer to a mere crumb of memory.

Learn something.

Miami Beach Botanical Garden - Bigfoot Cools his Heels

By: Irene Sperber on .

IMG 5206 “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” Dr. Seuss

Naturally I assumed that the huge dark resin art piece named Bigfoot I stumbled over plopped in the Botanical Garden pond was named after Sasquatch, that lovable folkloric lug alarming inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest. I was so wrong.

This Bigfoot arose from artist Idan Zareski’s thoughts after ruminating on assorted countries Idan has called home. The French National was born in Israel...

Sagamore Hotel - The Fundamental Things Apply

By: Irene Sperber on .

CricketvvvvvCricket Taplin in Sagamore lobby            The post-modern Sagamore does not come by its designation as the South Beach Art Hotel by luck and whimsy.   Avid art collectors Marty and Cricket Taplin bought the classic 1948 Sagamore Hotel (by architect Albert Anis) in 1997. When Cricket opted to curate the beautifully renovated premises with their extensive contemporary art collection, the hotel became an instant hot spot from the inception. Cricket Taplin began the coveted once a year Sagamore Brunch during Art Basel’s very first planned exhibition in 2001 that, if you recall, was postponed...

Manny PrieresManny Prieres        Manny Prieres’ solo exhibition “Lock Them Out And Bar The Door. Lock Them Out Forevermore” at Spinello Projects is a library of reinvented banned and censored publications.

Graffiti in the Gallery

By: Heike Dempster on .

works in RIGID Wynwood has been a mecca for Miami graffiti artists and muralists for many years and the galleries have taken note. The latest show featuring street art in the gallery space is “Rigid” at NOW Contemporary Art in Wynwood, which was curated by Brandon Opalka.

NOW, a gallery known for sculpture, installations and conceptual work, has chosen to exhibit paintings for the first time, but in an unconventional way. “Rigid” pushes boundaries and blurs the lines between fine art and street art.

Director Pablo Dona explains “I was always fascinated with the art in the streets. When I moved to Wynwood with the gallery I saw the whole process and the writers getting involved. I think it is undervalued and...
