The New South Beach?
Hollywood’s Burgeoning Art Scene is Making it
the Place to be for Up and Coming Artists

Story and Photos by Elizabeth Fernandez

Stefan Vonfouts

Miami artist Stefan Vonfouts has his own studio but chose the Gallery of the Unknown Artist in Downtown Hollywood to display Mona Lisa Lite Brite. It took him 12 years to complete the project

In 1925, much of South Florida was still backwater swamp with few people and fewer roads. Back then, when Joseph Wesley Young imagined a golden city in the midst of this marshland, few could have dreamed of what the future would bring.

Now, 80 years after the birth of Young’s city, a solid block of metropolis extends from West Palm Beach to the end of the state, encompassing famous cities like Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Hollywood, a small city with a big city mentality, lies right in the middle. With it’s own distinctive history and flavor, it has become one of the 10 largest cities in the state, boasting a population of over 300,000.

“Hollywood is a definite cool and upcoming place that reminds me of [New York's] East Village in the 80s,” said Jaroslaw Rottermund, former Manhattan resident and owner of the PRL Euro Café.

The Art of Life
Conni Gordon’s Classes Unleash the Inner Artist

By Lisa Cates

Conni Gordon and students

Conni Gordon, center, surrounded by students and their masterpieces

As I walk into Conni Gordon’s Miami Beach art studio, students from her afternoon class have just dispersed after painting a mountain landscape portrait. Each canvas looks incredibly different. There is a warm feeling throughout the studio and everyone is eager to show off their final product.

Since 1979, Gordon’s art studio and headquarters have been situated in 10,000 square feet which used to be one of Miami Beach’s first nightlife spots, replete with disc jockey booth, the Bill Jordan Bar. Through the years, Gordon has proved to be prolific in her painting as well as publishing techniques. She has taught over 15,000,000 individuals around the world to tap into their creative potential through her original, four-step art and “TILS” method. Her system, which sets out to demonstrate the technique of right and left brain thinking, has kept her teaching method in demand for over 20 years.
