“Paint Me Miami” promotes and bring visibility to up and coming artists. This year, the  painting competition,  held yearly in various locations throughout Miami, is focusing specifically on paintings that are inspired by the city of Miami. To gather the widest range possible of artists, the open call for submissions is being extended until Oct. 23.

In a Nov. 2 opening reception and awards ceremony at the Arts & Design Gallery in the historical MiMo district along the trendy Biscayne corridor, three talented winners will be chosen, each receiving cash compensation and Awards Certificates of Excellence. The winning paintings, as well as all paintings in the competition, will be on display in the gallery for the week following the ceremony.

Now in its seventh year, “Paint Me Miami” has grown incrementally each year. This year’s event will include live music by the Afro-Cuban-Soul band, Oriente and a specially arranged dance performance from Dance NOW! Miami. Attendees can stroll the gallery, view the art and enjoy cocktails and small bites.

“Paint Me Miami” was conceived by Mercedes Lopez Cisneros, a member of the City of Miami Arts and Entertainment Council (MAEC), who hosts the week-long display. MAEC is the voice of the artist community within the City of Miami and the instrument to instruct and guide our local leaders in the importance of art for our city.

Cisneros says that “Paint Me Miami” was conceived with two goals in mind.

“We wanted to celebrate the beauty of the city of Miami by restricting the theme to scenes relating to our city. The second goal was to create a platform for artists to exhibit their work and to win cash prizes. From its inception in 2011, we have awarded more than $11,000 in cash prizes.”

A lawyer by trade for 25 years, Cisneros says she has always had a passion for art. When she is not working, Cisneros devotes her time to creating paintings and being involved in community activities related to art.

Cisneros said, “I believe this is a great opportunity to show what our local artists are creating and we are providing a venue to do it. Art enriches one’s soul.”
